Our Patient Participation Group at the surgery is called 'The Patients Voice' and we currently meet virtually via Microsoft Teams every few months to discuss various items including practice and Primary Care Network (PCN) updates, and also discuss and share ideas on how to assist the practice.  If you would like to become a member please contact the surgery for guidance , we encourage patients to get involved!

One of the items on the agenda at the moment is looking at improving  practice websites and we are working with the CCG and other practices in our PCN.  Please see the attached survey below to have your say, the more responses we receive the more views we have to see how to we can improve practice websites.

Please do not call the practice about booking a 1st COVID-19 Vaccination unless you have received a text from the practice advising you to contact us to book an appointment.

A city-wide vaccination programme is being coordinated centrally and people will be contacted by us when they are eligible.  Please can we ask you do not contact the surgery to ask when you will be receving the vaccine as the volume of calls we are receiving about the vaccine is putting our practice staff under a lot of pressure. This is preventing us from dealing with other patient requests as efficiently. Please be patient – there is a process to make sure those who are at highest risk receive the vaccine as soon as possible,

How can I book a vaccination?

Vaccinations are not bookable. We are inviting patients for vaccination depending on their clinical vulnerability or age, as per national guidelines. You will be contacted as soon as you are eligible for a vaccine.

How will I be invited for a vaccination?

You will be contacted via text or letter if you dont have a mobile. We are regularly sent new slots to book at the citywide vaccination sites (The Gosforth Racecourse and the Eagles Community Arena). We usually offer these slots a few days before the vaccination session.

There is a separate national system inviting patients to book an appointment at mass vaccination sites such as the Centre For Life. You can either wait for an appointment through this system, or wait for us to contact you directly for one of the GP vaccination sites.

How are you prioritising patients?

We are following national guidance to offer people at highest risk of illness and death a vaccine before we offer appointments to people at lower risk. This will save the most lives and it is the best way to reduce the number of serious cases.

You might know somebody in a lower priority group than you, who has already been invited for a vaccination. At The Grove Medical Group, we have a very large elderly population and so it has taken longer to vaccinate our highest risk population. Please be patient while we vaccinate as many people as soon as possible.

I need a vaccine because of my job, how do I arrange an appointment?

Vaccination of patient-facing health and social care workers will be co-ordinated through your employer.

People in other employment groups (e.g. teachers, police, taxi drivers, etc) are not being prioritised for vaccination based on their occupation. This is a national decision which we are obliged to follow. You will be invited based on the priority group you fall into (age and/or clinical vulnerability).


Are you giving vaccinations at the practice?

No – GP surgeries in Newcastle have pooled their resources to run large vaccination sites together at the Gosforth Racecourse and the Eagles Community Arena. This set-up means we are able to vaccinate more people faster. Vaccination slots are allocated to GP practices based on their population size.

I need a second dose but I haven’t been given an appointment yet.

 The latest evidence suggests the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine provides protection for most people for up to three months.Getting both doses remains important so we would urge people to return for it at the right time which will be between 10 and 12 weeks from the first dose.

NGPS are notifying the surgery just prior to the 11th week after your first dose to allocate us with appointments for a vaccine. Please do not contact the practice asking to book a second appointment. You will be contacted by the practice directly when the time is right.

In light of the ongoing Coronavirus situation the practice have decided to change our systems to make us more flexible and able to respond to the changing environment.  If you feel you need help please dont wait, we are open as usual and have just changed the way we work to ensure patients and staff members safety.

  1. All GP appointments have changed to five minute telephone appointments but if you feel you need to be seen face to face then these requests will be triaged by  a GP via telephone. Patients with any flu like symptoms will not be able to attend the surgery and will be advised to self isolate at home.
  2. Reception will ask you questions regarding your illness and we ask that you co-operate to make things easier for the GP who will call you. Please ensure we have your up to date contact details before ending your call.
  3. Any home visit requests will be triaged by a GP via telephone before visiting.
  4. Repeat prescription request turnaround time for processing will be changed to 72 hrs to enable staff to cope with the increase in the prescription requests.
  5. We are continuing to put extra safety measures in place in our practice

    It is a requirement for patients to wear a face covering when entering the surgery.  If you do have an appointment we would be grateful if you could come with your face covering on – covering your nose, mouth and chin.  This can be in the form of a mask, scarf or handkerchief of any sort of fabric. We also ask for you to bring less items (bags/coats) to your appointment wherever possible and this will also reduce the risk of spreading the virus.


Our objective is to deliver the care our patients need whilst minimising those patients who need to attend the practice face to face. This being the case, please do not attend the practice in person unless you already have an appointment.


We ask all of our patients to continue to observe advice around hand washing and self isolation. This will help to protect the most vulnerable in our community. 


We appreciate that this can be a worrying time but would like to reassure you that all necessary steps are being taken by our team to prevent the spread of Coronavirus within the surgery.

NEW:  Our new e-Consult service is now up and running!  e-Consult is an online triage and consultation tool, you can get safe, confidential advice from a GP and other members of the team. You can also use this service for administrative reasons such as requesting sick notes, referrals, test results and medical reports. General health advice and Self Help guides are also available.



Practice Boundaries - Updated December 2019

The reaffirming of our boundaries will help ensure that new patients are clear as to where they can register with a GP and patients already registered with us will continue to receive the best level of care.

There are minor changes to reduce the left hand boundary south of Forsyth Road in Jesmond. We are also clarifying the northern boundary as there are new estates which did not appear on previous maps.

These changes do not affect current patients in these areas but will mean that new patients moving outside the inner boundary will be advised to register with closer practices.

Q: Why is this being done?

A: The reaffirming of our boundaries will help ensure that new patients are clear as to where they can register with a GP. Some new estates and road changes are not clear on older maps.

Q : What does this mean for me as a patient?

A: The propose change will have no impact on patients currently registered with the practice who are currently within our existing practice area. 

Q: What happens if I move outside the boundary?

A: You will be asked to change GP practices to one that is more local to your new address. Having a local GP practice means a more co-ordinated care as many community teams are co-located and there are closer links with those teams.

Access & Parking

Access to the surgery is by means of a ramp.  The doorway to the waiting room has been designed to allow easy access for wheelchairs and most of the consulting rooms can be accessed without negotiating steps.  There is a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

There is a car park to the right of the building for the use of patients.  However, the practice can accept no responsibility for theft or damage to parked vehicles.

GP extended access

We are now able to book our registered patients into extended access GP appointments. The GP Hub's are situated at:

  • Molineux Street
  • Ponteland Road Walk in Centre
  • Westgate Road 

The appointments are with local GPs and are pre-booked for you (so no need to sit and wait). For further information please see Out of Hours page

Ring your GP surgery

Monday – Friday 8am – 6pm.


Ring NHS 111

Between 6pm – 8am, and on weekends.

They will sign post you to the appropriate service or, where appropriate, book an appointment with a GP.

This could be a telephone assessment, a face-to-face appointment at a treatment centre or a home visit.


They may also book an appointment at your registered GP practice the next day if your   condition is less serious

Patients who need to be seen urgently on the same day can access additional appointments at local treatment centre with a GP.


To book an appointment, telephone NHS 111 who will ask you a series of questions about your condition and, where appropriate, book you an appointment at your nearest treatment centre.


Same day appointments for poorly children under 12 years

Doctors are readily available to discuss any concern you may have regarding your child and we offer urgent appointments each day during our working hours - this could save you an unnecessary trip to A&E or a walk in centre. You may also find information in the Little Orange Book (details below) useful. You can also access free advice from the 111 service 24 hours a day. This is a freephone number from landlines and mobiles.

Newcastle Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group (NGCCG) have developed a 'Little Orange Book' aimed at providing support to parents of young children. The book covers common minor illness, treatment and also times to seek medical assistance. Year of Care (YOC)

At The Grove we now implement the Year of Care approach to the management of Long Term Conditions (LTCs). This approach follows the principles below:

  • Patients with LTC's (typically diabetes, heart and stroke disease) that require blood tests will be sent an initial appointment with one of our Health Care Assistants.
  • We will then send the results of these tests to you and you can decide whether you would like to make a further appointment with one of our Practice Nurses.
  • Patients with LTC's (typically asthma and COPD) that do not require routine annual blood tests will simply be invited for a practice nurse review.
  • Patients with multiple LTCs are invited for longer nurse review appointments. The patient and the nurse can agree on a management plan for the year ahead, whilst completing a full review of all existing long term conditions.
