Take Care of Your Heart: It’s the Only One You Have!
February is Heart Month, a time to focus on keeping our hearts healthy.
Heart disease is one of the biggest health problems in the UK, but the good news is that many cases can be prevented. Small changes in daily life can make a big difference!
Why Heart Health Matters
Heart disease affects millions of people in the UK. It’s a leading cause of illness and can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other serious problems. According to the British Heart Foundation, around 7.6 million people in the UK are living with heart or circulatory diseases.
These diseases cause one in four deaths in the UK, meaning around 460 people die from these conditions every day. Coronary heart disease alone is the single biggest killer, responsible for around 66,000 deaths each year.
The good news? Many risks can be reduced by making simple lifestyle changes.
Easy Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy
Taking care of your heart doesn’t have to be hard. Here are some simple steps you can take:
1. Move More
Regular exercise is a powerful tool in keeping your heart strong. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week – just over 20 minutes a day! Walking, cycling, or even dancing in your kitchen all count. Let’s get moving!
2. Eat Well
What you eat affects your heart. Try to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Cut down on processed foods, salt, and sugary drinks.
3. Stop Smoking
Smoking damages your heart and arteries. If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your heart. Need help? Your GP or local stop-smoking service can support you.
4. Manage Stress
Long-term stress can increase your risk of heart problems. Find ways to relax, whether it’s through exercise, hobbies, or talking to someone you trust.
5. Check Your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol
High blood pressure and cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease. Many people don’t know they have these issues because they don’t always cause symptoms.
High blood pressure is easy to check and can be managed with lifestyle changes or medication. Many pharmacies offer free blood pressure checks for over 40s.
Know the Signs of Heart Problems
It’s essential to know the warning signs of heart disease. Chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, and feeling very tired can all be signs that something isn’t right. If you experience these, speak to your GP as soon as possible. Being aware can save lives.
